This vintage hand-carved hippopotamus sculpture is crafted from dense black marble exhibiting natural mineral veining and a polished surface typical of mid to late 20th-century artisan stonework.
The sculptor shaped the form with rounded contours, emphasizing the animal’s weight and presence while retaining simplified, incised facial details common in folk carving traditions. Pieces of this type were produced across regions known for small-format stone sculpture, including Africa and Mexico, where marble and serpentine were favored for their durability and workable density.
At 4 inches in length, the figure functions as a compact decorative accent or paperweight with substantial tactile weight.
