Original handmade clockwork inside … Read more Rare early 19th century working automaton sewing box with hidden compartments for necessaries and sewing implements. Original handmade clockwork inside which operates a working windmill. Ormolu mounts and neoclassical temple structure. Stairs pullout / pull-out to reveal compartments as do the tiny ormolu cupid niches. Mirrored inside to give a feeling of infinity. Glazed glass pained windows, a middle tray for thread. Small doors open for storage or novelty. Obviously this was made by a learned person for a betrothal gift or for a gift of friendship. Flag on top finial is punch dated "1803". Case is of rosewood and African mahogany. Alabaster columns. Ormolu mounts. See less
