Blue and white floral chinoiserie jar Delft, 1680-1690
The baluster-shaped pot has a short, upright neck and is painted in blue. On the belly is a decoration of six wide and six narrow panels. The wide panels are alternately painted with floral scenes and with Chinese objects. On the shoulder of the pot, the upper parts of the broad panels are filled with an ornamental motif, bordered at the top by a ruyi, a stylized representation of a mushroom. At the bottom, the panels are closed by a band of six planes, below which is a band of large and small banana leaves.
Dimensions: height 23,5 cm / 9.25 in., diameter 19 cm / 7.48 in. This vase is about 330 years old and in very good condition with clear glaze. It has the usual small glaze chips to top and bottom rim, typical for Dutch Delftware.
The decor with a layout of panels is derived from the Chinese kraakporcelain that was massively imported into the Netherlands in the first half of the seventeenth century. This porcelain was mainly copied in Delft and other Dutch production centres in the seventeenth century. Dishes, plates and bowls were most commonly made, pots and bottle vases are rarer.
