Blue and white dish with flower vase Delft, 1670-1690
The dish has a wide, spreading flange and is painted in blue with a vase and three flowers with leaves, standing on a ground in front of a balustrade. The flower vase itself has a garland on it.
In the left foreground are two blooming flowers; above them, three smaller flowers sprout from a stylized rock. A smaller rock with a flower is painted on the right side. An insect flies in the sky.
Dimensions: diameter 38,5 cm / 15.15 in.
Condition: very good, few rim chips typical for Dutch Delftware.
At first glance the central decor appears to be purely Dutch or European, but has its origins in Chinese porcelain from the first half of the seventeenth century, which was widely imported into Europe. For example, the "hanging" rocks with flowers on either side and the three stacked flowers bending to the left in the vase still recall the Chinese originals. In contrast, the shape of the flower vase and the garland decor applied to it is European. The panelled border, in turn, is derived entirely from Chinese kraakporcelain.
