Polychrome chinoiserie wine jug Delft, circa 1680
The polychrome wine jug has an ovoid and turned body on a low spreading foot, a conical neck with spout and a handle with a scroll finish. The jug is painted in blue, purple and green with a continuous chinoiserie landscape with three Chinese figures. Bands with rectangular ornaments between double circles are applied on the shoulder and just above the foot. The neck is painted with a double leaf motif. The handle is decorated with stripes and scroll ornaments.
Dimensions: height 23 cm / 9.05 in, width over the handles 15,5 cm / 6.1 in.
Multi-coloured chinoiserie landscapes on Delftware were only made for a short period of time, roughly between about 1680 and 1690. Most of the decors have been applied on dishes, lobed dishes, butter pots, beer mugs, wine jugs and spiced wine bowls with covers. The most common colour combinations are blue and yellow, blue and purple, and purple and yellow. Tricolour combinations are rarer, apart from blue, purple and green they are also known in purple, green and yellow.
Condition: The jug has Bright shinny glaze. Usual chips to the rim and some glaze loss on the spout. Some superficial hairlines and some wear marks where a handle and lid were once attached. I have official proof of authenticity such as vintage catalogs,
designer records,
or other literature sources and take full responsibility for any authenticity issues arising
from
misattribution
