This exceptional set of 10 vintage Japanese wooden plates beautifully combines refined lacquer craftsmanship with the pure aesthetic of natural wood. These pieces embody traditional Japanese design, where simplicity, material expression, and artisanal technique come together in perfect harmony.
Dimensions: diameter 17 cm, height 2 cm. Good condition.
Originally used for the presentation of wagashi (traditional Japanese sweets) during the tea ceremony, these plates are a fine example of post-war Japanese artistry.
The rims are hand-finished in urushi lacquer using the “Tora-nuri” (虎塗り) technique — a distinctive lacquer style where a red lacquer layer is polished back to reveal the black underlayer beneath, evoking the striped pattern of a tiger’s fur (tora = tiger). This creates a unique sense of depth and movement on each individual plate.
The center showcases the beautiful natural wood grain, lightly patinated, allowing the warmth and texture of the wood to take visual center stage. The underside is traditionally lacquered in black, offering a sleek contrast.
A rare and versatile set, perfect for:
– Presenting fine dishes or small bites
– Decorative objects on a low table or console
– Organic wall art in a minimalist interior
These plates embody the Japanese aesthetic of simplicity, imperfection, and natural beauty.
