Roman school of the seventeenth/eighteenth century
the nymph daphne with cupid
oil on canvas (49 x 57 cm. - framed 69 x 75 cm.)
the painting, extremely pleasant and of great decorative effect, has as its subject a nymph accompanied by the little cupid portrayed outdoors near a waterfall, and is placed in the repertoire of roman painting of the late seventeenth/eighteenth century.
the setting of the scene still follows the dictates of baroque, with the stylistic and figurative characteristics of the painting that evoke the echoes of roman painting of the seventeenth century; the painting immediately recalls pietro da cortona, although the author's style bears elements of classicist ancestry.
the subject could likely be inspired by one of the most famous and depicted mythological tales in art, that of apollo and daphne, taken from ovid's metamorphoses (i, 450-567).
judging by the pose of the nymph, portrayed with her gaze opposite to her direction as if in the act of fleeing, it recalls the moment in which daphne flees from apollo, after cupid has struck him with his arrow making him fall madly in love.
the setting would also make us lean towards this subject, given that in the background we see a waterfall flowing into a river: in fact, when she arrives at its banks, daphne will pray to the river-god peneus, her father, to transform her into a laurel plant, so that apollo can stop chasing her.
it is therefore likely a painting born in series, with the different moments of the myth, where here we see daphne's escape, while cupid turns to the observer to indicate the scene with a mocking smile. It could also be a test painting or sketch for the creation of a more complex canvas.
