Coastal view at sunset with fishermen and boats
Atelier of Charles François Grenier De Lacroix, known as de Marseille (Marseille 1700 – Berlin 1782)
oil on canvas
50 x 62 cm. - in frame 64 x 80 cm.
The proposed work, depicting a splendid coastal view made brilliant by the warm lights of the sunset, presents the distinctive characteristics typical of the compositions of Charles François Grenier De Lacroix, one of the most important landscape painters of 18th-century European painting and a specialist in depicting seascapes, and is therefore attributable to one of the numerous students and collaborators active in his atelier.
Versions very similar to our composition can be found in the most important international museums and private collections, belonging to a large series of paintings that the master created, together with his collaborators, especially during his stay in Italy.
After his apprenticeship with Vernet in France, De Lacroix collaborated with the master for several years in Rome, where he is documented until 1760 and was certainly in Naples until 1776.
His marine paintings were very fashionable at the time, a genre favored by the nobility from Great Britain and Northern Europe who came to Italy for the Grand Tour and were sold as souvenirs of the trip.
Often, therefore, they were not commissioned as simple decorative elements, but were intended to represent a gallery of images of the most significant places or views seen during their long stays.
The immortalized view, although the fruit of the author's imagination, is inspired by the suggestive coasts of the Mediterranean with a port, animated by small and lively figures of fishermen with their moored boats. The clear light of the sun, the pink clouds and the calm surface of the sea contribute to the harmonious and idyllic atmosphere of the work.
The painting is in good condition with a beautiful carved and gilded wooden frame.
