Created between 1917 and 1923, published as a suite in 1948. Known for its spiritual and emotive content, the series combines themes of human suffering, redemption, and dignity with Rouault’s signature expressionist style. This work features a monumental, sculptural figure rendered in bold chiaroscuro, conveying intense emotional weight and physical presence.
