Neoclassical commode hand-made in Italy in the late 1700s using oak and decorated with walnut veneer. The chest of drawers shows the typical straight lines of the neoclassical style, with tapered legs and straight corners. The commode features four overlay drawers with ogee edges decorated with crossbanded walnut veneers along the perimeter framing diagonal (herring bone) veneer. The same pattern of veneer is replicated on the flat sides and the top, giving nice balance to the piece as a whole. The edges of the top, the legs and the entire case are also covered with crossbanded walnut veneer. The drawers work well and can be used on a daily basis. The hardware has been replaced with period-appropriate brass handles and escutcheons.
Overall this is a beautiful, elegant piece that because of its straight lines and light color would fit perfectly in a modern home. The alternation of the colors of the different grain of the wood give it beautiful, natural decoration and make it a one-of-a-kind piece of furniture.
