This original Cy Twombly, Coronation of Sesostris poster was produced by the Pinault Collection for an exhibition at the new Bourse de Commerce in Paris. The 130-year-old domed historic building has been meticulously restored and reimagined into a contemporary art museum by architect Tadao Ando. The Coronation of Sesostris, part of the museum’s permanent collection, is an epic ten-part painting cycle that recounts the legendary conquests of the Egyptian pharaoh Sesostris. In Twombly’s vision the pharaoh’s life journey is depicted in the arc of a single day from sunrise to journey's end. The cycle begins with the rising sun—the pharaoh himself—and progresses across a series of canvases to the center panel 5, which is featured on this poster. At high noon, the apex of power and triumph, a boat surges forward under a burst of radiant colors –red, yellow, orange, purple– exploding like fireworks, evoking victory, glory, and exaltation. As the series continues, vibrant tones fade into a palette of somber black and white, marking the approach of the journey’s end and the transport to the afterlife. The poster is beautifully printed, capturing Twombly’s signature energy with vivid colors and fine detail. See less
