An abstract silkscreen in colors on paper titled “Curve” by Takesada Matsutani. Signed in pencil lower right. Titled and annotated 42/75 on the lower left. Published in 1971. The composition features a bold red-orange organic form encased within an inverted indigo triangle, anchored by radiating geometric lines that evoke movement and expansion. This juxtaposition of organic and mathematical elements reflects Matsutani’s ongoing exploration of energy, balance, and form. Propagation-L embodies the artist’s signature use of spatial tension and conceptual minimalism within the framework of 1970s Japanese and European avant-garde printmaking.
Provenance: London Arts Group, Detroit. Dimensions: 27.5”h x 27”w (unframed). In very good vintage condition. Full condition reports are available upon request.
Takesada Matsutani (1937 - ) is a celebrated Japanese contemporary artist known for his contributions to the Gutai Art Association and for his innovative abstract and minimalist works. After joining Gutai in 1963, Matsutani developed a unique visual language using vinyl glue, graphite, and printmaking techniques that explored organic forms and material transformation. Following a French government scholarship in 1966, he moved to Paris, where he continued to experiment with silkscreen printing and mixed media. Matsutani’s works have been widely exhibited in major museums including the Centre Pompidou (Paris), the Guggenheim Museum (New York), the Dallas Museum of Art, and the National Museum of Art (Osaka). He was also included in the landmark Gutai retrospective at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in 2013. Matsutani's work is held in international collections and has been recognized for its enduring innovation and material sensitivity.
