moreDesigned in 1949, 'The Round one', famously dubbed 'The Most Beautiful chair in the World', this Hans Wegner design was chosen by John F. Kennedy as the seating for the first ever televised presidential election debate. For this reason it is also known as 'the Presidential chair'.
Although the design is often described as the purest distillation of minimalist modern chair form, great carpentry skills are required to craft it, the arm and back rest piece in particular. The frames are made from the finest teak which shows a deep rich red tone, and the cane contrasts wonderfully with its natural variety of shades.
The distinctive Wegner weave is both beautiful and practical, providing an extremely comfortable seat. Both chairs are marked 'Johannes Hansen Copenhagen Denmark and are branded with the maker's mark. These are highly collectible, rare early examples from one of the finest cabinetmakers in Danish modernism's past.
The seller says: Both chair frames are in near excellent condition with only the very slightest of signs of wear visible. The cane on one chair is perfect, while the other has one broken strand where it crosses at the front and 3 of the front edge loops are missing. This can easily be fixed/replaced.
