An exceptional and rare Japanese tea ceremony set (ca. 1950–1970), consisting of three meticulously crafted ceramic pieces, each finished with a striking Shiso-te yū (紫蘇手釉) glaze. This set embodies the harmony and aesthetics of Japanese tea culture, balancing functionality with refined artistry.
Created and signed by Noma Gazan (間野雅山), a renowned ceramic artist working in the Agano/Takatori tradition, also known as Natsuyoshi Yaki (夏吉焼).
1. Mizusashi (水指) – Water Container for the Tea Ceremony
The central piece features a classic, robust form with a handmade lid handle braided from clay. The thick, organically flowing glaze ranges from white and grey to deep shiso-purple hues, characteristic of the rare Shiso-te glaze inspired by the subtle color variations of the shiso plant (Perilla frutescens). Dimensions: height 20 cm, diameter 15 cm
2. Chabana Vase (茶花瓶) – Vase for Tea Flower Arrangement (Ikebana)
This accompanying narrow vase is intended for displaying simple floral arrangements (chabana) during the tea ceremony. Its understated elegance and modest lines are enhanced by the same flowing Shiso-te glaze, giving each piece a distinct and organic character.
3. Yobitsugi Cylinder (呼継) – Open Cylindrical Stand
This small open cylinder is traditionally used to hold whisks (chasen) or small tea tools. Its wide opening and stable form provide both practical use and visual harmony within the set.
All three pieces are in excellent, flawless vintage condition — free of chips, cracks, or restorations.
Not only functional within the context of the Japanese tea ceremony, this set also forms a beautiful decorative ensemble.
Ideal for collectors of Japanese ceramics, admirers of wabi-sabi aesthetics, or as a distinctive accent in any refined interior. This piece has an attribution mark,
