Although unsigned, the vibrant colors and exquisite detailing reveal the hand of a master. That master is thought to be Viennese Biedermeier period painter Josef Lauer (1818-1881) who was known not only for still-life painting as a genre, but especially renowned for the detail and astounding natural effect of his floral and fruit compositions.
Lauer studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and exhibited his works at the Academy's exhibitions and the Viennese Kunstverein. Note the partial Sotheby’s label on the stretcher.
