This authentic two-panel Korean screen is from the 20th Century and is highlighted with the design of two painted silk screen panels over a light gold matte background. This screen depicts a scene from daily life set in nature. Like much of the art found on screens from the period, designs include themes from nature or animals, while others depict longevity and prosperity or portraits of royal figures. The characters on this screen appear to be of royal stature. There is also information for us on the outside of the screen written in Korea characters in gold.
This screen has two folds and a square painting depicting two figures on a landscape, mounted to patterned silk panels, mounted to a hinged ebonized wood frame with metal corners. The figures are dressed in Korean traditional clothing in hues of red, blue, green, gold and some neutrals. The character panel is affixed to the monochrome (fabric/paper) back. There are prominent Korean characters on the outside of the screen.
It is overall 48 inches tall and 40 inches wide.
This screen could benefit from a bit of conservancy, and it is in fair condition for a few reasons. The silk outside of the panels shows signs of fading. There is also some damage to the wooden spine at a top corner of the screen. There is also fading or loss of the intensity of color to an area on the outside of the panels (purple-blue side). Despite all of this, it remains an elegant and artistic screen with delicate painting on the front of the panels. The detail of the figures on the silk panel is bright and detailed.
Korean screens appeared during the period of the three kingdoms. Their purpose was to separate rooms. The art form was influenced by screens from Japan and China. Koreans received examples of screens from China, created new ones and then sent those back as exports. They were initially used in the royal court, then spread to use by the general population.
