Measuring 17 inches wide, 9.25 inches deep, and 7 inches high, this mid-19th century American domed-top document box reflects the vernacular craftsmanship of central Massachusetts, likely originating in Worcester County between 1840 and 1860. Constructed from a wood core clad in pressed black leather, the box is bound in natural leather straps affixed with round-headed brass tacks, a construction technique associated with regional manufacturers producing traveling cases and personal trunks in towns such as Leominster, Grafton, and Fitchburg.

The box’s distinctive domed form, sometimes referred to in period sources as a "French bonnet" or "valise top," suggests a functional hybrid between a gentleman’s portable document chest and a compact traveling case. Centered on the lid is a hand-gilded monogram, “H. S.,” rendered in elegant serif script, which offers a clue to original ownership and personalization, likely indicative of a middle- or upper-class professional or merchant.

The hardware includes a cast brass bail handle and a rectangular keyhole escutcheon, the lock mechanism still retaining its original working key, secured on red cord—a survival seldom encountered. The interior is fully lined in a diagonally woven red and white chevron-patterned textile or paper lining, typical of New England box linings of the period, many of which were manufactured in mills located in Worcester County and distributed through Boston.
