Raphael Soyer (Russian/American, 1899 -1987) framed lithograph of 'Dancing Lesson' from the Memories portfolio, 1969. Printed writing underneath artwork. Written in pencil at lower left 15/150 and signed at lower right. Frame has light wear, some chips at rim and loss of paint. Frame measures 23 3/4" x 38 1/2". Print and writing in matte measure approximately 21" x 17". Print is in excellent condition.

Raphael Soyer was a Russian-born American painter and printmaker known for his social realism. Born in 1899, his family immigrated to the United States in 1912 to get away from oppression and political turmoil within Russia. They settled in Bronx, New York where he would ultimately study at Cooper Union, the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League. He had his first solo exhibition in 1929. The Whitney Museum held a retrospective of his work in 1967.
