Offered is an early Stanford White designed picture frame, fabricated by Newcomb-Macklin circa 1915-1940. The frame is untouched, with original gold leaf and a red bole, over wood. In excellent, untouched condition, some wear and surface losses are shown in the photos. These are primarily to the corners.

Sight size 11.5” x 17.25”
Molding width is 2.75” as stated on the back. It measures a fraction less.
Overall size 16.75” x 22.5”
A note on the back notes that it was made to hold a 12' x 17.75" work of art.

Pencil notations on the back are shown in the last two photos. In addition to the dimensions, the gilt finish is noted as "met ant tone 155 tone". Additionally, there is a 5288(z?) and 4566. I found another example on Worthpoint where the listing stated:

"There is a lot of old penciled writing on the back... including the number 4566... I think this design of frame was listed in a Newcomb Macklin catalog from 1938." However, they were unable to confirm this. If the "4566" is a design number, it would confirm that it was made by Newcomb Macklin but not necessarily identify the date of production from any given year's catalog. My thought is that the oxidation and tone of the wood suggest a date closer to 1920.

Notes: Stanford White’s original design of this frame model, circa 1880, was fabricated of hand-carved wood by Joseph Cabus, New York.

"Stanford White closely guarded permissions for the fabrication of his frame designs. Following his death in 1906, the Newcomb-Macklin Company of New York and Chicago acquired the molds and rights to reproduce White’s frame designs and began making copies under its own name in 1912." See less
