Tamara Aladin (1932-2019) is a major figure in Finnish design, particularly renowned for her bold and colorful glass creations during the golden age of Scandinavian design. As one of the most prolific designers at the renowned glassworks Lasi Oy Riihimaki, she left her mark on her era with objects featuring sculptural forms and vibrant hues.
Born in Helsinki, Tamara Aladin trained as a ceramist at the Institute of Industrial Arts (Taideteollin oppilaitos) between 1954 and 1956. However, it was in the art of glass that she found her true calling.
In 1959, she joined the design team at Riihimaki Glassworks, one of Finland's largest glass manufacturers. She worked there until 1976, during which time she designed a significant portion of the company's catalog. Her work was intended for mass production, embodying the ideal of Finnish democratic design, which aimed to beautify the everyday lives of the greatest number of people with high-quality objects.
Tamara Aladin's style is distinguished by strong geometric forms, an expressive use of glass mass, and a rich color palette. She designed over 150 pieces for them, ranging from utilitarian objects like bottles and jars to decorative vases that have become design icons.
Today, Tamara Aladin's legacy is experiencing a huge revival. Her creations are actively sought after by collectors worldwide and are considered representative examples of the optimistic, pop aesthetic of Finnish design in the 1960s and 1970s. This piece has an attribution mark,
