A rare and refined set of ten Ko-Imari porcelain dishes circa 1670-1690 during Japan’s Edo period. Molded in the delicate form of chrysanthemum petals, each dish features a softly scalloped rim and painterly underglaze blue decoration depicting swirling clouds, stylized chrysanthemums, and wave-like scale patterns.
Crafted in the Arita kilns of Hizen Province, these early Japanese porcelains exemplify the technical sophistication and sculptural elegance of the period. The cobalt blue palette pools richly in the recessed petals, enhancing the dimensionality of the molded form. The reverse is adorned with a scrolling floral band and bears a distinctive kiln mark within a square reserve, typical of the finest Arita production of this era.
Related examples appear in the Shibata Collection (Kyushu Ceramic Museum), one of the most authoritative holdings of early Japanese porcelain. The combination of chrysanthemum molding, restrained decoration, and early kiln mark suggests these were intended for elite use—either for the domestic nobility or early export through the Dutch East India Company.
