This Jean Michel Basquiat very rare vintage 1996 offset lithograph print custom framed collector's Neo-Expressionist London exhibition poster " Two Heads on Gold " 1982, is an incredibly special and unique piece to add to your collection.
The exhibition poster print is published by The Serpentine Gallery Kensington Gardens, London. Printed in 1996 in an unnumbered limited edition on the occasion of the exhibition. Jean Michel Basquiat ( 1960 - 1988 ) was born in Brooklyn New York in 1960. His early creative career was as the Street Graffiti artist nick named " Samo " in the late 1970's on New York City's Lower East Side. By the early 1980's with the help of his friend Andy Warhol, Basquiat began to make his emotionally charged aesthetically arresting Neo-Expressionist paintings. In 1992 The Whitney Museum of Art held a major retrospective exhibition of the life works of this great American Contemporary artist and master of social commentary.
His work focused on suggestive dichotomies such as wealth vs poverty, integration vs segregation, and inner vis outer experience of the human condition. He appropriated poetry, drawing, painting, and marries text and image with Abstraction and Figuration. Basquiat's works has strong social commentary and deeper truths about the individual and the power structures of racism, and criticism of colonialism and support for class struggles.
The Serpentine Gallery in Kensington Gardens London has presented pioneering Contemporary Art since opening in 1970. From the pavilion to the exhibitions, they champion new ideas in art and architecture. At Serpentine, there is a shared vision of free art for all. It proudly has been a free public art institution since it opened in 1970.
The 1996 exhibition at Serpentine Gallery was the first solo showing of Basquiat's work in a public gallery in Britain since his death. This exhibition brought together major paintings from throughout Basquiat's brief but powerful career. The exhibit began with paintings from 1981 through those completed shortly before he died in 1988. Each artwork offered insight into the germination and evolution of the various subjects and techniques Basquiat explored. He was fascinated by cartoons, technology and consumerism. He reflected a determined exploration of what is was to be a black American in the 1980's.
The rare out of print framed London exhibition poster print measures 20 1/4" W X 30 1/4" H X 1 3/8" D.
It is custom framed with UV protective plexiglass in a Contemporary Modern slim profile detail museum box style matte eggshell finish black metal frame molding, with an attached hanging wire on the reverse back side for easy wall installation.
It is in excellent " like new " condition. The poster print is in excellent " like new " clean vintage condition consistent with age and light signs of handling.
