Oscar Claude Monet ( 1840 - 1926 ) was a French painter, a founder of French Impressionist Painting and most consistent and prolific practitioner of the movement's philosophy of expressing one's perception before nature, especially as applied to Plein Air landscape painting. The term " Impressionism " is derived from the title of his painting " Impression, Soleil Levant " which was exhibited in 1874 in the first of the independent exhibitions mounted by Monet and his associates as an alternative to The Salon De Paris.
Monet's ambition of documenting the French countryside led him to adopt a method of painting the same scene many times in order to capture the changing light and the passing of seasons. From 1883, Monet lived in Giverny, where he purchased a house and property and began a vast landscaping project which included lily ponds that would become the subjects of his best known works. Artworks by Monet are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
The " Nympheas ( Water Lillies ) " is a monumental series of approximately 250 oil paintings depicting his beloved flower garden in Giverny. These Impressionist masterpieces were the main focus of his creative output in the last 31 years of his life.
The venerable famous printing house of Imprimerie Mourlot Paris was founded in 1852 by The Mourlot Family. It is known worldwide for its fine art lithography printing, and one of their most important contributions was to be the art poster. Mourlot became the place where posters were prepared and produced as works of art in their own right.
Beginning in the 1930's Fernand Mourlot invited the major master artists of the time into the lithography studio to learn the medium of printing together. Encouraging the artists to work directly on the lithography plates to create original prints and posters in limited editions. The results of this artistic collaboration between master artists and Mourlot became internationally known for their originality, beauty, and exquisite craftsmanship.
The Galerie Granoff in Paris was founded in 1924 by Katia Granoff a passionate collector and art dealer. Known for its role in the art world and its historical significance. The gallery at Place Beauvau was the first to exhibit Monet's " Nympheas " in 1955. Galerie Granoff became known for its early rediscovering and exhibiting of Monet's Water Lillies, which were initially considered unmarketable. Paintings from this series have now been sold at record prices for more than eighty-four million.
