Andy Warhol ( 1928 - 1987 ) is one of the singularly most well known Contemporary artists of all time. His imagery is recognized worldwide. His infamous life, art works, and creative endeavors are like no other artist. He is credited as the very first artist to use common everyday objects and view them in a completely different way while paying homage to their role in our society. Glorifying the common as the beautiful. His technique utilizing a silkscreen method combined with hand finishing in a signature palette of vibrant color hues make the work stand on its own and loved by millions.
The inspiration for Warhol's Cow artwork came from Ivan Karp, an instrumental art dealer in the 1960's. Karp once told Warhol " Why don't you paint some cows, they're so wonderfully pastoral and such a durable image in history of the arts ". Gerard Malanga, Warhol's printer was the one who chose the photograph of the cow. But ultimately, it was what Warhol did with this image that made the final product so interesting. He used a bold high contrast color scheme, which made the bovine animal a humorous and strangely exciting subject matter. The Cow Series was first shown at Warhol's exhibition at The Leo Castelli Gallery in New York in 1966, and remains one of his most recognizable and iconic images.
This exhibition poster comes from Warhol's first solo exhibit in France at The Musee D'Art Moderne De La Ville Paris in 1970. This landmark exhibition originated at The Pasadena Art Museum then traveled to The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Musee D'Art Moderne Paris, The Tate Gallery London, and The Whitney Museum of Art in New York.
" Animation Recherche Confrontation ", is a term associated with the Pierre Gaudibert founded experimental section called ARC at The Musee D'Art Moderne in Paris in 1967. The ARC aimed to create a new museographic model in France, focusing on direct relationships between artists, their works, and visitors, emphasizing current artistic research. The new approach moved away from traditional static displays toward a more interactive model. The ARC legacy contributed to the evolving role of museums as active participants in Contemporary artistic discourse and cultural life.
