This Maximalist Pair of Old Paris Spill Vases are whimsical but had a very practical purpose in the 1800’s home.
What might appear as exuberant flourish is actually a built for purpose fire lighting system. Long strands of thinly shaved wood were needed to carry a small flame from the hearth to light candles The wood strands were called called “Spills”. Old Paris Spill Vases like this ornate pair, held the wood shavings that literally spilled over the sides.
Look at the sections & frills around the opening of Spill Vases. The frills helped to separate thin swirls of wood from clumping together & getting tangled.
The flatness of the backs & oblong bases keep the vases stable on the mantle.
A French design that solved a house hold problem that was functional as well as luxurious.
Also makes a fabulous planters for indoors.
Looks sensational with trellised ivy.
