This Maximalist Pair of Old Paris Spill Vases are whimsical but had a very practical purpose in the 1800’s home.

What might appear as exuberant flourish is actually a built for purpose fire lighting system. Long strands of thinly shaved wood were needed to carry a small flame from the hearth to light candles The wood strands were called called “Spills”.
