A striking piece of California counterculture history, this original 1968 lithograph by artist K.C. (Ken) Rignall captures the turbulent spirit of its moment with wit and graphic punch. Titled "Meanwhile Back in the States," the image depicts a rocket-propelled muscle car blazing across a vivid turquoise sky above three burning hearts — an image that reads equally as surrealist pop art and pointed Vietnam-era social commentary.
Printed by Berkeley Graphic Arts (Richmond, CA) as part of the Group Commentary series (catalog no. GC-130), this was one of a collective of artists using the visual language of the era — bold color fields, dotwork, and comic-influenced imagery — to address the American social landscape. The aesthetic sits at the intersection of psychedelic poster art, underground comix, and hard-edged graphic design.
Hand-signed by the artist in the lower right corner. The turquoise ground retains excellent color with no fading. Age-appropriate edge creasing present; free of rips or tears. Unframed — a natural candidate for a vintage poster frame.
Ships rolled in a protective tube.
A genuine document of late-1960s West Coast visual culture.
