A janggu is a traditional hour glass shaped drum from Korea.


It is often used in traditional samulnori percussion music as well as accompaniment in pansori (traditional story telling).


This drum was made during the early 1900s (most likely 1920s), during the period of Japanese colonization of Korea


This was a time of extreme oppression to the Korean people and culture. Playing instruments like the janggu during this time was very much a form of resistance.


This janggu is a larger size and was more likely used for pansori rather than samulnori.


This one measures about 23 inches in length and about 17.75 inches in diameter. The drum is in overall good condition. One of the drum heads does have a slight tear. But other than that, it’s in great shape for its age See less
