A rare and distinctive painted cupboard from the Northern Italy/Austria border, dating to the late 18th century (circa 1780–1790s). The door features an oval medallion depicting Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers and spring, framed by draped neoclassical motifs. Painted decoration continues across the entire surface, adding charm and character. The cabinet stands on compressed scrolling bracket feet. A striking example of Tyrolean craftsmanship and decorative tradition.
COLLECTOR'S NOTE
Tyrolean cupboards of the late 18th century were typically constructed in softwood, then fully covered with gesso ground and painted in tempera or casein pigments. The painted surface here preserves its polychrome decoration remarkably well, with a central medallion of Flora framed by linear borders and stylized floral sprays. The compressed scrolling feet and paneled doors reflect regional construction methods, while the surviving surface layers illustrate how alpine craftsmen achieved durability through layered grounds and protective varnishes.
THE PRINCIPALS PERSPECTIVE
Exceptional 18th-century Tyrolean cupboards like this have become increasingly scarce in private hands, particularly those retaining their original painted surfaces and structural integrity. The survival of its polychrome decoration and undisturbed gesso layers enhances both authenticity and value. As regional folk art continues to gain recognition among design historians and collectors alike, examples of this caliber present a compelling long-term investment opportunity.
