Offering a small 1970s multi-faceted Murano style glass vase with light and dark gray colors submerged within the interior of the transparent glass. The technique is called "Sommerso" and is described below.
This striking handblown glass vase is intricately created by polishing the twelve facets to a high shine which creates radiating sparkles of light from all angles. The base is polished flat to remove pontil marks where the glassblower's rod was attached. This small vase has a glistening presence like a faceted diamond. A real winner!.
EXCELLENT VINTAGE CONDITION. No chips, No cracks, No scratches and No damage of any kind. It was purchased from an Art collector's estate in Sarasota, Florida and we were told that it sat on a shelf for over 50 years. The new owner will be very happy about its immaculate condition.

SOMMERSO:
The Sommerso technique (Italian for "submerged" or "sunken") is a highly skilled glassmaking method, particularly associated with Murano glass, that creates multiple layers of contrasting colored glass within a single object without the colors mixing.
Here's how it generally works:
Inner Core: A master glassmaker first blows or shapes an inner core of glass, usually in a specific color. Submerging in Molten Glass: This initial glass piece is then repeatedly immersed into pots of molten glass of different, often contrasting, colors. Each immersion adds a new layer. Outer Layer: Frequently, the outermost layer is made of clear, colorless glass, which acts as a magnifier, allowing the inner layers to be seen with depth and intensity. Shaping and Finishing: Throughout the process, the glass is reheated and shaped by blowing and tools, ensuring the layers maintain their distinct boundaries. The result is a striking visual effect where colors appear to be suspended or "submerged" within each other, creating a sense of depth and luminosity.
The Sommerso technique was popularized in Murano, Italy, in the 1930s, with notable contributions from artists like Antonio Da Ross, Carlo Scarpa, and especially Flavio Poli, who became widely recognized for his exquisite Sommerso creations in the 1950s.
