description of the item:
antique, large pair of sculptures in fine porcelain biscuit, depicting a girl and a boy in 18th-century clothing with baskets, signed under the base with a green anchor, the first mark used in the second half of the 19th century by the french manufacturer vion et baury, the same period as the pair. Immediately after the photos of the item, we have included a photo of the mark attributed to vion et baury by an auction house, confirming our attribution of the sculptures to this manufacturer.
useful information for evaluating the item:
from a web search, we found that large pairs like ours are offered at auction or for sale from a minimum of €1,500-1,700 to over €3,000. A taller biscuit than our sculptures, but a single piece, was offered at auction by pirone with an estimate of €2,500-4,000.
final considerations on the item:
the artistic quality of the two items is extremely high. Note the beauty of the children's faces, slightly tilted upwards, a typical rococo pose. The patina under the base is excellent, darkening the biscuit and giving the two sculptures that antique look that only the passing of time can give. Finally, consider that they are very, very large, 35 cm tall but also very wide, weighing over two kg each for a total weight that easily exceeds 4 kg of the finest porcelain biscuit.
information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
vion et baury is a french manufacturer founded in 1845 and famous above all for its artistic biscuit porcelain, which can be polychrome or white, as in the case of this pair. This is the first mark, used between 1845 and 1880, later replaced by a raised stamp, usually blue, with the manufacturer's initials inside, "v & b." we are therefore talking about one of the first and oldest productions. This pair of white biscuit sculptures are very similar to the famous 19th-century sculptures from the french manufacturer sevrès, which they rival in quality. This piece has an attribution mark,
