Large 12” wide, black-on-black pottery bowl dates from 1943-1946. This size of bowl is a quite rare find for collectors of Maria Martinez. It is signed by “Marie + Santana”. Maria’s daughter-in-law, Santana, assisted Maria in the bowl’s firing.
Maria Martinez was born near Sante Fe, New Mexico, and was part of the San Ildefonso Pueblo. She became the most famous of all pueblo potters and, indeed, a a notable figure in the Native American pottery tradition. Her black-on-black pottery is highly prized and her pieces are in the collection of over 20 museums.
This bowl was given to my mother and father as a wedding present in 1946. My father lived near Sante Fe as he recuperated from TB. We have some notes from my father to help authenticate this piece’s provenance.
