Ikebana Moon-Eclipse was hand-formed and is stamped.
Formed as a full moon or possibly an eclipse. The textured dark glaze suggests oxidation of an archaic bronze. The mark is likely that of either the kiln site or the artist. There are no indications that it was cast. If you look closely at the inside of the vessel in the next-to-last photo, there are indications of this, and no casting lines are visible. The base was also constructed by hand.
In the 16th century, Sen no Rikyū and Furuta Oribe chose specific vessels to hold flowers for the tea ceremony. In modern times, artists like Isamu Noguchi made sculptures for use in Ikebana. Most of the vessels for ikebana, found in the West, were mass-produced and marketed by firms, such as Toyo. This falls somewhere between mass-produced vessels and one-of-a-kind studio pottery. I suspect multiples of this form were produced, but each was done by hand.
