Item description:
a stunning group of hard-paste white porcelain figures depicting a lady, a gentleman, a sheep, and a cherub holding a large garland of flowers, signed under the base with the mark of the german manufacturer nymphenburg, namely the classic shell-shaped shield engraved on the porcelain, and another mark in blue underglaze consisting of a "c" and a "t" intersecting each other and crowned, with the date of production of the sculpture underneath, namely "1920." engraved in the porcelain, and another mark in blue underglaze consisting of an intertwined "c" and "t" crowned, with the date of production of the sculpture, "1954," underneath. Finally, the catalog number is also engraved. The blue mark indicates that this is a model designed by frankenthal (an important german porcelain manufacturer active in frankenthal in the palatinate between 1755 and 1799) and then reissued by the nymphenburg manufacturer in 1954.
useful information for evaluating the item:
our research shows that nymphenburg porcelain has achieved impressive auction results. The oldest and most important pieces, created by francesco antonio bustelli, one of the leading figures in porcelain manufacturing in the 1700s, have been sold at auction for between €15,000 and over €40,000, which gives an idea of the importance of nymphenburg porcelain. For groups similar to ours, also made around the mid-20th century based on models from the frankenthal factory, prices range from a minimum of €500 to over €740, depending on the size and quality of the sculpture.
information about artist and/or manufacturer:
the nymphenburg porcelain manufactory is a porcelain factory located in nymphenburg palace in munich, founded in 1747 by prince-elector maximilian iii of bavaria. Shortly after ascending to the bavarian throne in 1745, maximilian iii encouraged the establishment of porcelain factories to improve the state's finances. The first attempts at neudeck castle in the au district of munich failed and were an economic disaster. When, after many attempts, the result was finally satisfactory, francesco antonio bustelli was invited to work as a figurine maker on november 3, 1754. In 1755, the first court orders were placed. In 1756, they succeeded in painting porcelain. In 1761, the factory was moved to nymphenburg palace, where it is still located today. Among the great artists who worked at nymphenburg, dominik auliczek the elder and johann peter melchior are worth mentioning alongside bustelli. Considered one of the oldest and most important german porcelain manufacturers, nymphenburg boasts numerous impressive auction results, thousands of collectors, and is internationally renowned for the quality of its artistic productions. In the last photo, we have included some historical notes on the factory and the marks used, including, at number 9, the frankenthal mark, where the notes on the marks state (in french) that it was a mark used for models taken from frankenthal, and the date indicates the year the porcelain was made by nymphenburg.
