Notice the nice detail of the molding and painting which you only find in the original Victorian version of this piece. Spill vases such as this were used on fireplace mantels to hold tightly rolled tapers of paper or thin wooden sticks (called spills) meant for transferring fire from the fireplace to a candle, pipe, stove, etc.

This piece is in excellent antique condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. There are small spots of paint loss on the rifle butt and cape (pictured) and some staining likely from use above the fireplace. On the back of the vase there is a visible horizontal line which is a glazed over artifact from production, not a crack or repair (pictured).
