This exquisite antique 6” x 6” porcelain Minton Hollins tile is a rare find originating from Stoke-on-Trent, England. It is likely to have been designed by John Windsor Bradburn. The Minton Hollins company was known for producing high-quality decorative tiles, particularly during the Victorian era. They were pioneers in ceramic printing and glazing techniques, producing both functional and alluring ornamental tiles which were widely used in grand homes, churches, and public buildings, including the Houses of Parliament and the Victoria & Albert Museum.
Features of the Tile:
- Hand-painted design: The tile features a striking composition with a swallow perched on a green stem, surrounded by white narcissus or daffodil flowers. The use of shading and layering, especially in the bird and the blue border, creates a sense of depth and movement.
- Gold metallic background: The reflective gold surface is a hallmark of high-end decorative tiles from the period, adding elegance and sophistication.
- Intricate floral details: The flowers and foliage are painted with precision, showing the craftsmanship of Minton artists.
- The design reflects influences from the Aesthetic Movement and Art Nouveau, popular in the late 19th to early 20th century. The nature-inspired subject, combined with the gilded background, suggests a production date of circa 1870-1900.
- Backstamp markings: The reverse of the tile is marked with: Minton Hollins & Co., Patent Tile Works, Stoke-on-Trent, EW (which could indicate a specific batch or design series)
Gilded art tiles can be framed as tile wall art; set on a display stand or easel; employed as architectural salvage; or simply kept as a collectible Minton tile.
