The drop-down … Read more We came across this magnificent desk a few years ago and couldn't resist owning it for a while.

The drop-down front creates a desk surface and reveals rows of stunning drawers, each with the tiniest dovetails we have ever seen. Paperwork - from The General Trading Co. (the Mayfair) in London, found in one of the drawers describes this piece as "18th Century Mahogany Fall-Front Apothecary's Desk on Square Leg Stand all original brasses circa 1770. This piece was exhibited at the Antique Dealers' Fair, Grosvenor House, Park Lane, London, W1."

A carpenter friend did some work on it and thought it was probably Dutch, but I don't know for sure where it was made.

The cabinet is separate from the rectangular wooden base it rests on and both pieces would likely fit in a large SUV.

It is truly a statement piece that would elevate any room. You could hire an expert craftsman to restore it to its 18th century origins, or, if you don't mind some imperfections in your life, leave it as is and enjoy those beautiful drawers.

There is a 1990 bill from a company that indicates some repairs were made to the tune of $1,000. We will include the paperwork that was found in the drawers to help with the provenance of this unusual piece.

It measures about 39 inches wide by 20 inches deep by 63 inches tall. See less
