An exceptional and highly original antique oak library card catalog cabinet featuring 30 graduated drawers, rich quarter-sawn oak grain, elaborate Victorian detailing, and all of its original brass label holders and cup pulls. Pieces of this quality and condition are becoming increasingly difficult to find, especially with such outstanding architectural presence.
What makes this cabinet particularly interesting is the March 30, 1886 patent date that is embossed directly into the lower left front oak base molding—a feature we researched extensively. The date corresponds with an early patent period for library catalog cabinet construction and drawer hardware, placing the cabinet among the earliest generations of standardized library filing furniture. While many examples were later refinished or altered, this cabinet retains its original character, finish, and hardware.
The brass pulls are engraved with an elegant intertwined monogram and remain untouched with a beautiful aged patina. Inside, many drawers still retain their original removable divider systems while others have been opened up over the years for larger storage, making the cabinet exceptionally functional for modern use.
Originally designed for libraries or institutional archives, today it makes an incredible statement piece in a home office, study, retail space, designer showroom, or collector's interior. It works beautifully for organizing jewelry, art supplies, sewing notions, collectibles, photographs, ephemera, hardware, spices, tea collections, or virtually any treasured collection.
The quarter-sawn oak exhibits wonderful tiger ray fleck throughout, and the cabinet displays the warm patina that only develops after more than a century of careful use.

Condition
Overall this cabinet presents beautifully and is in very good antique condition.
It retains its original finish and hardware with the expected wear associated with well over a century of use. The brass has developed a rich untouched patina. Drawers slide well and fit properly. Some drawers retain their original divider inserts while others have been modified over time by removing the dividers.
The underside shows evidence of historic repairs and some old wood deterioration that has long since stabilized and does not affect the cabinet's structural integrity or everyday use. As expected with antique institutional furniture, there are scattered marks, scratches, finish wear, and age-related imperfections that only add to its authenticity and character.
Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description.
Why Collectors Love These
Original library card catalog cabinets have become one of the most sought-after categories of institutional antique furniture. Their combination of architectural beauty, exceptional craftsmanship, and practical everyday usefulness makes them equally desirable to collectors, interior designers, and homeowners. Cabinets retaining original hardware, original finish, and early patent details continue to become increasingly scarce, particularly examples in oak with attractive proportions like this one.
This is a substantial, investment-quality piece of American library furniture that would become the centerpiece of virtually any room.
