A cast brass door knocker shaped like the head of Dionysus crowned with an ivy wreath. Made from brass, remains in original condition. C1900
In ancient Greek mythology Dionysus Eleutherios "the liberator" is the god of the grape harvest, winemaking, orchards and fruit, vegetation, fertility, festivity, insanity, ritual madness, religious ecstasy, and theatre. He is said to free his followers from self-conscious fear and care, and subvert the oppressive restraints of the powerful.
A lovely piece of Victorian door wear.
