LAURITZ ADOLPH HJORT:
Lauritz Adolph Hjorth (1834-1912) was a Danish potter and industrialist. He is known for founding L. Hjorth's Terracotta Factory on the island of Bornholm, Denmark in 1859, specializing in producing terracotta, stoneware and earthenware items. He began to focus on decorative vases, figurines and later table lamps well into the Early 20th Century, often incorporating floral and animal elements characteristic of the Art Nouveau movement. His work, particularly his terracotta pieces, was widely exhibited and gained international popularity around 1900. He also produced Jugendstil vases, many in black-burned terracotta. After Lauritz Adolph Hjorth's death in 1912, his sons, Peter Christian Hjorth and Hans Adolph Hjorth, took over the business. His descendants continued to operate the factory for many years.
