Made by Harvin Company, a Baltimore, Maryland metalworks that made fine fireplace equipment. The company later merged with Virginia Metalcrafters (also known for high quality fireplace accessories) in 1956. The figures are the Hessian soldiers, with their distinctive hats, well known in the Charlottesville, Virginia area, for having been quartered there after their defeat at the Battle of Saratoga during the Revolutionary War, fighting for the British. Many place names around Charlottesville refer to these soldiers, several thousand of whom were in the area by 1779. Maker’s marks found on the backside of the tip of the hat. Irregularities to the casting, as made. Glossy black finish to the fronts, fire patinated billet bars are removable for easier displacement.
