Unlike discus throwing, which goes back to Classical times, the shot put is a relatively recent sport, with roots in the Middle Ages and the first competitions in 19th century, Scotland. Thus, there are few artistic depictions of the sport, and even fewer as superbly executed as this, with the athlete's back and torso beautifully detailed, demonstrating Delapchier's mastery of the human anatomy. The bronze is beautifully cast, chased and patinated, and retains its original marble base. See less
