Stunning turquoise crackle-glaze faience Art Deco vase by renowned French ceramicist Edmond Lachenal (1855–1948). With its ovoid, bottle-shaped form, rich turquoise coloration, and distinctive crackle surface, this piece makes a bold and elegant statement—perfect for a modern entryway, living space, or curated interior. This vase is a rare piece by a master of French ceramics whose work has enduring appeal among discerning collectors.
Lachenal began his career at the prestigious faience workshop of Théodore Deck, joining as an apprentice at age 15 in 1870. His talent quickly distinguished him; by 1873, at just 18, he was promoted to Director of Decoration, overseeing the artistic design of Deck’s ceramics. He held this position until 1881, when he left to establish his own workshop. Celebrated for his innovative glaze techniques and experimental firing methods, Lachenal's work is included in the collections of major institutions such as the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Victoria & Albert Museum, among others.
This piece features a textured surface with a distinctive crackled glaze—a hallmark of Lachenal’s work. The vibrant turquoise is accented by darker tonal variations, likely resulting from layered glazes and unique firing processes. This specific technique is sometimes referred to as a volcanic crackle glaze. The color itself, inspired by Deck’s famous bleu Deck, reflects the aesthetics of both the Art Nouveau (1890–1910) and Art Deco (1920–1930) movements. The vase’s elegant shape—with its narrow neck and rounded, ovoid body—is also emblematic of the Art Deco period.
