British Sailor's Woolwork of HMS Victor Emanuel with Red and White Ensign Border,
Circa 1865-75
The square format British sailor's woolwork or sailor's woolie depicts the H.M.S. Emmanuel sailing on a rough sea coming into land with a British fort in the background all within an ivory matte and bird's eye maple frame.
The starboard view of the ship shows a strong sea breeze blowing with the signal flags, red banner and red ensign all being blown toward to the bow of the ship. The ship is depicted within a large porthole border with a Royal crown above. To each side are large ensigns- a white one to the left and the red to the right.
Embroidered on the port hole border is the motto:- Honi soit qui mal y pense. This is a maxim in the Anglo-Norman language, a dialect of Old Norman French spoken by the medieval ruling class in England, meaning "shamed be whoever thinks ill of it", usually translated as "shame on anyone who thinks evil of it". It is the motto of the British chivalric Order of the Garter, the highest of all British knighthoods, except in Scotland
Below the porthole is a wavy banner with the name "HMS Victor Emanuel embroidered on it. Below are flowers and stems- roses for England, a thistle for Scotland and a three leaf clover for Ireland.
Named after Victor Emanuel, King of Sardinia (also known as Piedmont-Sardinia) and future King of Italy,

HMS Victor Emmanuel
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Victor_Emmanuel_(1855))
The HMS Victor Emanuel was a screw-propelled 91-gun second-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, originally launched as HMS Repulse, but renamed shortly after being launched.
Victor Emmanuel was an Agamemnon-class ship of the line, a class originally designed as 80-gun sailing two-deckers.[2] They were re-ordered as screw ships in 1849, and Victor Emmanuel was duly reclassified as a 91-gun ship on 26 March 1852. She was built and launched on 27 February 1855 under the name HMS Repulse, but was renamed Victor Emmanuel on 7 December 1855, in honour of Victor Emmanuel after he visited the ship.
She served in the English Channel, the Mediterranean, and off the African coast during the Anglo-Ashanti wars.[3] On 4 May 1861, Victor Emmanuel ran aground on the Leufchino Shoal, in the Mediterranean Sea. Repairs cost £69.[4] She was assigned to Hong Kong to replace HMS Princess Charlotte and used as a hospital and receiving ship there from 1873. She was sold in 1899.
Victor Emmanuel II (Italian: Vittorio Emanuele II; full name: Vittorio Emanuele Maria Alberto Eugenio Ferdinando
Tommaso di Savoia; 14 March 1820 – 9 January 1878) was King of Sardinia (also known as Piedmont-Sardinia) from 23 March 1849 until 17 March 1861,when he assumed the title of King of Italy and became the first king of an independent, united Italy since the 6th century, a title he held until his death in 1878. Borrowing from the old Latin title Pater Patriae of the Roman emperors, the Italians gave him the epithet of Father of the Fatherland (Italian: Padre della Patria).
