The elongated vertical composition and beautifully muted palette of moss green, olive, taupe, cream, dusty rose, brown and deep blue give the piece an atmospheric, timeworn quality.

The textile appears to be densely worked in wool or wool-blend yarn using a needlepoint or gobelin-style technique. It is mounted over a plywood panel with a coarse natural canvas or burlap-covered reverse, secured with upholstery tacks. The title “La Source” is handwritten on the backing, and an older hanging wire is attached.

Maker and exact country of origin are unknown. Estimated to date from the mid-20th century and inspired by traditional French and Flemish verdure tapestries. Its tall, narrow scale would be especially striking on a stair landing, between windows, at the end of a hallway or in an architectural niche.

Condition

Good vintage condition with age-related fading, surface variation, minor edge wear and localized fraying. Slight waviness or bowing is present. The reverse canvas shows expected discoloration, folds and visible upholstery tacks. Older hanging wire is attached and should be inspected or replaced before installation.
