Sam Calder
Samuel Raymond Calder made a working hobby of creating fine stoneware. His pieces were almost invariably thrown on the potters' wheel because he preferred this technique, and one seldom finds two alike. He was an artist-craftsman that loved to create but disliked duplicating. As soon as he had perfected one piece he was driven by a compulsion to try for a new design. Fellow potters were unstinting in their praise of the quality of his designs and glazes. Sam was an art graduate of Brigham Young University. Mr. Calder taught art there until his war service interrupted. After the war he worked at Disney Studios in animation. He left there to attend Chouinard Art School where he studied commercial art and illustration for three years. Sam also worked as a commercial photographer. As a photographer he did work for Norman Rockwell. But his first love was throwing pots. Mr. Calder's only formal training in pottery was gained in a few months of special courses at USC. Sam and his wife and two children ran a shop at Universal Studios in Hollywood for seven years that sold their pottery. Sam Calder passed away in the early 1990s. Credit: Sam's Granddaughter
