Ceramic jug, handmade on a potter's wheel, glazed and decorated entirely by hand, with a medieval coat of arms in the center and floral and Raphaelesque decorations on a white background, in Baroque style, made and signed under the base by the "Veuve Perrin" factory, with the "VP" mark. The jug can be dated to the second half of the 18th century, between 1750 and 1780. The photos immediately below this description show historical notes on the manufacturer and some of the numerous marks used. The marks are listed in chronological order, starting with the first ones used in 1600 by Clerissy. Our mark is number 9, used as written in the notes in the mid-18th century, from 1750 to 1780, the period when the jug was made.

Veuve Perrin is considered one of the most important French ceramics manufacturers of the 1700s. According to our online research, Veuve Perrin ceramics are sold at very high prices, ranging from a minimum of €700-800 for individual plates to many thousands of euros depending on the size and beauty of the piece. Specifically, we found a salt cellar with a character sold by Christie's in Live Auction 4018 in 2015, lot 39, for €4,750, plus auction fees of 25-30%; the same price was achieved by a single candlestick, also with figures, in Live Auction 3558 in 2013, again at Christie's; while a soup tureen with floral decorations reached a price of €8,750, plus fees, at Live Auction 2859 in 2014, again at Christie's. This gives an idea of the importance and value of antique ceramics made by Veuve Perrin.

Final considerations on the object:
The patina covering the entire object is particularly beautiful, both on the mouth and on the belly, and especially under the base. The central heraldic coat of arms with a rampant lion and crown above is beautiful, probably the coat of arms of some French noble family of the time who commissioned the jug and probably many other pieces for the table. Unfortunately, the jug is a little damaged on the front with several scratches on the enamel, which is why the asking price is rather low.

Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
The first factory in Marseille was founded in 1600 by Joseph Clerissy. In the following years, several other factories opened in the same city, which had become an important center for French artistic ceramics. Among these, the most famous of all is the "Veuve Perrin" factory, founded by Claude Perrin around 1740. In 1748, Claude Perrin died and was succeeded by his wife, Veuve Perrin, "Widow Perrin," hence the initials "VP" on the jug, and his children, until its final closure in the early decades of the 19th century.
