A striking example of late 19th century Bohemian art glass, this enameled pilgrim vase – known as a moon flask – dates to circa 1890 and features richly textured cobalt blue floral decoration on a marbled white glass body. The white ground was created using a cased glass technique, where a layer of opaque white glass is fused within the body – providing a soft, painterly base for the raised enamel decoration. The enameling captures morning glories, bellflowers, a butterfly, and a bee with remarkable detail and painterly finesse, reflecting the aesthetics of the Belle Epoque and Japonisme movements.

The standout detail lies in the pair of applied square side handles, each decorated with a gilt quatrefoil motif framed by finely painted geometric accents – hallmarks of Bohemian and Austrian glass from the Belle Epoque period. These architectural handles reflect Goth Revival and Moorish influences popularized by the Historicism movement and seen in high-end Moser glass. Gilt beaded trim at the neck and foot further elevates the piece.
Unsigned aside form a small painted decorator’s mark on the base, this vase is likely from a Bohemian or Austrian workshop such as Moser or Harrach, circa 1880-1895. A beautiful and rare collector’s piece and an elegant addition to neoclassical, eclectic or maximalist interiors.
