• Drawn by either an artist on their grand tour of Europe (1660-1840), or, perhaps by a British soldier stationed in Gibraltar in the 19th century;
• From the artist’s sketch pad, on gray paper;

Known:
• O’Hara’s tower was constructed of hewn stone and iron between 1787 and 1791;
• This piece is of graphite and white crayon;
• The artist titled on the reverse.

O'Hara's Tower was a watchtower in the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar. It was located at the highest point of the Rock of Gibraltar.

The tower was constructed in between 1787 and 1791 on the order of then Lieutenant Governor Charles O’Hara (1740-1802). O'Hara had been of the opinion that a tower at The Rock's summit would enable the garrison to observe the activity of the Spanish fleet at the Port of Cadiz, about 60 miles away. He was alone in this belief; despite this, he succeeded in having the tower built.

Not only was the tower unsuccessful watching the Spanish Fleet, it was struck by lightning shortly after it was built, and remained in ruins for much of the 19th century until its demolition in 1888.

Piece is housed in a temporary plastic frame behind glass, and can be shipped flat with or without the frame and glass.
