A poignant mid-century still life composition that evokes solitude and reflection, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1977.

The painting presents a tall, elegant candlestick with a melting white candle beside a thick, well-worn book. A dark ribbon bookmark drapes softly over the book’s cover. The composition is set against a deep red background and a muted olive-grey surface, creating a rich contrast that draws the viewer into the stillness of the scene.

Executed in a restrained style, the artist has used minimal detailing and flat spatial planes, allowing texture and form to take precedence. The brushstrokes are deliberate and slightly coarse, especially in the candle’s flickering flame and the textured surface of the book’s pages, lending the piece a tactile quality.
