Japanese Shino Ware first emerged in the 16th century. It was traditionally used for food containers for tea ceremonies. Shino Ware is now widespread, far beyond Japan. This 4-sided stoneware vessel is in the style of Ogata Kenzan; it could be attributed to Miura Ken’ya (1821-1889) also known as Kenzan VI. Comparable pieces are in the collection of the Freer Gallery in Washington, D. C. and the Crafts Study Center in London.
The vessel has the characteristic thick Shino Ware glaze with pockmarks in the surface. The white sections, with brush decoration of plum blossoms, are another characteristic of Shino Ware. Branches of a blossoming fruit tree spread at angles across three sides of the vessel. The vessel is thick and heavy, yet another feature of many Shino pieces. There is a potter’s mark on one side; no discernible mark on the bottom although there are some tiny slashes and other indentations on the bottom.
In excellent condition, with no nicks or cracks perceptible, this vessel would be a signature piece in a contemporary setting or would enhance a collection of Japanese ceramics.
Dimensions: Height at the corners is 6” and 5 7/8” between the handles; Width at each side is 5 1/2” at the base and 4 1/2 “ at the rim; the diameter of the neck, within the handles, is 13 1/2”.
